FEATURES

Raising the Grade
Five years after Wisconsin received a C-minus in gender pay equity, a nonprofit formed in response to the below-average grade is still finding its footing. The government official who spearheaded the effort, Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton, says we can and will do more to ensure that women statewide can prosper. By Ray Anderson

The Primate Debate
The primate research controversy here rages on. For the last fifty years, the nature of the debate has stayed the same: those who believe in the research say monkeys must be studied, even killed, in the name of progress on human health. Opponents say the promise of a cure isn't enough to justify the cruelty. Contributing writer Maggie Ginsberg-Schutz wants the rest of us to decide what we think about it.

Design Stars
The HGTV craze is still in full swing - but what do Madisonians want their homes to look like? To find out we talked to top area designers who create interior looks from scratch or give you a redo. They're busy with everything from new luxury apartments to extravagant, log-cabin homes. Plus, where they shop, favorite projects, and what they'd never do. By associate/style editor Shayna Miller

Habitat: Are You Art Deco?
Maybe you're more of a Craftsman guy or gal. Victorian, perhaps? Or are you International? We all have our favorite styles of architecture, furniture and design- and what we prefer offers clues into our personalities and the ways we like to live. In this month's Habitat Handbook, contributing writer Jennifer Garrett sorts out the myriad styles of buildings and decor available in Madison.
