Give Andy Moore half an hour and he’ll reward you with the inside scoop on a hot music act.
That’s why he was tapped to host The 30-Minute Music Hour, a music performance and interview series on Wisconsin Public Television that began airing in March.
Each Saturday at 10:30 p.m., viewers catch Moore, a senior news producer at WPT, showcasing Wisconsin and Midwest bands and soloists—plus some national and international acts—from a wide range of genres.
Episodes open with the musicians playing. Then Moore appears onstage to ask a few questions. This easygoing format repeats several times.
Moore wants viewers to feel as if they’ve happened upon a sound-check, with him chatting up the band as they prepare for a performance.
“You can think of me as the stage manager pulling up a stool,” he says.
Three shows are taped in a single day each month. WPT offers live webcasts of the recordings on its website, wpt.org/wisconsinchannel. And what’s shown online is identical to what’s broadcast later on television. The 30-Minute Music Hour is a one-take show with no post-production work.
And that’s exactly how Moore likes it.
“It’s rough and raw at the beginning,” he says. “With any luck, it will stay that way.”
