Hip’s On Tap at Tip Top Tavern

The refurbished corner bar has new food, drink and personality

The Seitan Philly sandwich (left) pairs nicely with onion rings. The D. Williams Burger goes great with a side of cheddar cheese curds.

This landmark corner bar had a reputation, but it wasn’t for good food, cocktails and craft beers. New owners with roots in Mickey’s Tavern are changing that. They opted for a spruced-up interior rather than a radical remodeling. Oak paneling and ceiling tiles freed from years of grime now gleam; photos chronicling the neighborhood’s past grace its walls. A modern bar menu is just as fresh and inviting. Burgers and fries to be sure, but imaginative sand-wiches, too, like the Little Oscar—bologna, potato chips, mayo and yellow mustard on white bread. The old Tip Top just got trendy.
