Arts Access for All
Laurie Fellenz connects Madison students with music, art, theater and dance
Laurie Fellenz loved teaching band at Cherokee Heights Middle School. But a year ago she took on the role of fine arts teacher leader for the Madison Metropolitan School District to increase and equalize access to music, art, theater and dance at the district’s thirty-two elementary, twelve middle and five high schools.
She’s helped bring Overture Center resident companies into middle schools and add world drumming equipment and curriculum to elementary schools.
It’s all because she believes students deserve to experience the arts.
“I don’t think your education is complete unless you have that,” she says.
Katie Vaughn is managing editor of Madison Magazine.
