Perk Me Up
As we slowly roll into spring, it’s nice to give ourselves and our homes a little lift. Maybe that means picking up some throw pillows, a new handbag or piece of jewelry, or even snapping up a few stems to remind us what green looks like again. Either way, Gatherings has shoppers covered for a late-winter pick-me-up.
Owner Terry Hoard grew up working in the flower business, so owning his own tabletop and home décor shop was a natural career move. Gatherings celebrated its ten-year anniversary last year—a milestone few local retailers ever reach.
“I like this so much. Retail is in my blood,” says Hoard. “I can’t imagine doing anything else, and I like to make customers happy. It’s like you’re giving customers a present when you own a store.”
In today’s culture where you’re “in” one minute and “out” the next, Hoard’s consistent, strong vision in the quality and variety of merchandise he offers is one of the reasons why his shop has been around so long. He’s also been in the same cozy location since day one: a small commercial strip on Regent Street between Higher Fire Clay Studio and Regent Street Co-Op. He notes his location serves the Shorewood, Nakoma and University Heights areas quite well.
Hoard carries a few exclusive home lines like Simon Pearce and Le Jacquard Francais and jewelry by Melissa Joy Manning, Erica Molinari and Jamie Joseph. Currently he’s excited about Israeli designer Kisim, who makes beautiful leather handbags.
“I really look for enduring style, quality and craftsmanship,” he notes, rattling off facts about his merchandise as we stroll the store (Voluspa candles are pricier than most because they use a greater volume of fragrance; Moyna’s clutches are hand-beaded).
There’s something comforting about a retailer who’s been around a long time. In the case of Gatherings, the mantra “out with the old, in with the new” has some exceptions.
Price range: $2.95–$3,000
Owner’s Picks: Kisim “Cube” handbag, $495; Dana Kellin handcrafted semi-precious and 14K gold-fill jewelry, $150–$325; Simon Pearce glass rectangle vase, $135; Iittala “Aarne” barware, $22–$29.
Editor’s Picks: Leigh & Luca flocked scarf, $165; Zazou knit muffler, $52; Moyna hand-beaded clutch, $165–$180; Chan Luu onyx mixed necklace, $275.
Verdict: The store’s tagline, “living with style” certainly fits the overall feel of Gatherings—it’s got an urban feel with accessible price points—perfect for jazzing up any part of your life, whether it’s a new candle, a jaunty hat or a bunch of fresh spring flowers.
