Celebrate St. Pat's with the Nutty Irishman
Whether you’re looking for a drink to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or simply keep you going through the last legs of winter, consider the Nutty Irishman your new friend for the month.
Served in a tall glass mug at Erin’s Snug Irish Pub & Restaurant, the drink looks like a pretty coffee drink. But take a sip and you’ll realize it packs more of a punch than your everyday latte.
A mix of coffee, Bailey’s Irish Cream and Frangelico hazelnut liqueur, the hot drink is aromatic and full-flavored but not heavy. It’s been popular since the restaurant and bar opened in 2007, says Cindy Schluter, one of the owners. “That’s one that will always be here,” she adds.
Many variations on the cocktail are available, says bartender Kelly McGann. Vanilla liqueur pairs nicely with coffee in place of hazelnut, or hot chocolate can be substituted for coffee. Ask your bartender to add crème de menthe to make the drink minty and green.
Regardless of the particulars, the Nutty Irishman makes for a great cap-off to an evening, McGann says. Or, given the tasty combination of coffee and alcohol, perhaps it’s better as a start to one.
