Summer Fun with Sunnies

Area shops have shades for the whole family

With summer officially here and the temperatures soaring, it’s time to start dressing the part. When trading jeans for cargoes and losing anything with sleeves, it’s important to remember that safe and stylish accessory—sunglasses.

One of the few accessories you can honestly claim you have to have, sunglasses do the vital job of protecting your eyes and the skin around them. We took to a few Madison shops to see what sunglasses do the trick for everyone in the family.

A trip into family-run and designer-friendly Ulla in Hilldale led to a suggestion from resident optician Margot that’s worth splurging on. The Hanna by Salt [shown above] sports a square lens that flirts with a cat eye and peripheral vision-friendly arms. Ulla stocks it in a lighter tortoise and a fun black with pink interior. Both shades come equipped with polarized lenses. $415 at Ulla

For men, the staff at REI teamed up to select the Smith Pavilion Evolve [shown above], a stylish rectangular model that boasts both polarized lenses and eco-friendly construction. The tortoise frame is made out of a bio-plastic that is made from castor seeds, and the lenses are scratch- and impact-resistant, making these sunglasses both environmentally responsible and durable. $119 at REI

Sunglasses are also a must-have for children of all ages, but the good news is that they won’t break the bank. Cow & Lizard in Fitchburg offers up some cute girls sunglasses by Tatiri for $7.19 [shown at right] while Capitol Kids on Carroll Street has a selection of rubber Kushies sunglasses for infants for $5.49. A trip to either of these shops should be enough to convince the kids that sunglasses are cool.
