Many breast cancer survivors reclaim their bodies through physical activity. TEAMSurvivor Madison is the local affiliate of a national organization designed to foster healing from all types of cancer through fitness activities and health programs for women. In addition to triathlon training, women of all athletic levels participate in walking, biking, swimming, kayaking, Dragon Boating (a sport in which twenty women paddle a long, narrow boat) and more. TEAMSurvivor Madison regularly organizes a team for the Komen Race for the Cure.
President Diane Stojanovich co-founded the Madison chapter, which now has more than 100 members, in early 2003. A non-Hodgkins lymphoma survivor, Diane had always considered athletics a vital part of her life. That became even clearer as she recovered from cancer, and it is reinforced as she watches other women recover through sports and physical fitness. “I knew the difference that exercise made for me in my cancer journey,” she says, and through TEAMSurvivor, “you see this amazing metamorphosis these women go through.”
