Reduce, Reuse, ReThread
Someone’s old becomes your new at this vintage resale shop
For certain shoppers, the thrill of the hunt (and buy!) is the most exciting part of an expedition. Sifting through racks of sleek, one-of-a-kind cocktail dresses, piles of baubles and stacks of shoes is a task for the hardy shopper, one who typically enjoys vintage and consignment shopping. Enter ReThreads, a “buy/sell/trade” vintage and resale boutique, according to district manager Natasha Poepping.
The original ReThreads opened in Milwaukee in March 2009, the downtown Madison location quickly followed in October 2009, and a third location opened on Odana Road last September. This higher-end resale shop carries brand names like Ann Taylor, J. Crew and Banana Republic along with designer goods like Chanel, Prada and St. John. ReThreads’s model is simple: Customers bring in their gently used clothing and accessories, and if it meets ReThreads’ standards and is in season, they’ll offer you cash or store credit.
Pieces like Chanel sunglasses, a 1980s Louis Vuitton suitcase, a Rafe snakeskin handbag and Prada Mary Janes have all walked through the doors, says Poepping. “It’s crazy what things people get rid of,” she says, referring to the designer duds traded in at the shop. “But a lot of people want those things to go to a good home.”
And that leopard dress I might’ve picked up on my expedition to ReThreads? I like to think that it went to a stylish home, too.

Pretty Little Things
If you like designer pieces but don’t necessarily want to pay a premium price, ReThreads has a quality, rotating selection of jackets and dresses. We’ve seen vintage frocks and contemporary cocktail dresses mingle together on the same rack.
A Smart Start
Poepping says the Milwaukee location was started by Ike Isaacson and his granddaughter, Beret, who had worked at a Buffalo Exchange—another popular shop with the same concept as ReThreads with locations around the U.S.
You never know what you’ll find on the ReThreads handbag wall: it’s a mixed bag of vintage and designer goods that’ll tempt your wallet.
These cage peep-toe booties are a perfect example of the stunning shoes ReThreads stocks. Shoes must be unworn or have very slight wear, says Poepping: “We’re pretty picky about shoes; they have to be in good condition.” Along with department-store usuals (Steve Madden, Nine West) look for Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Coach, Donald J Pliner and vintage designer shoes by brands like Salvatore Ferragamo.
Shoppers who enjoy vintage and resale browsing love finding a diamond in the rough. Look through the shop’s assortment of whimsical brooches (we saw a very on-trend vintage pastel parrot when we were there), statement necklaces,
charming earrings and cool shades to find your perfect match.
