So Much to be Learned From Sparrows

The slant of light elaborates the morning glow
which only now achieves the rare, soft colors
to which the day aspires.
We watch it capture passing time in silence.

Yet, how busy are the sparrows
absorbing dust motes that dance across the alley.
The early sun becomes their spotlight,
shrill chirps echo
as they noise the stillness of the air.

A mother stuffs her fledgling’s beak,
scolds its tenuous grasp upon the bush.
One preens lackluster wings.
Unconscious of its mediocrity,
it chirrs, inclines its head as though in thought,
then perches, puffed upon its natural space.

Encircled by the precious slant of light
the trivial aspirations,
the ordinary tasks of sparrows fashion the day,
absorb the universe with unremarkable beauty.
