Francisco’s Cantina Has Fresh, Flavorful Mexican Food

This just-off-the-Square treasure is a hidden gem

Tucked between two bars a block off the Square, Francisco’s Cantina is easy to overlook. It’s a small place but a big find. Don’t be surprised to be greeted by owner Francisco Gonzalez or served by one of his nieces or nephews or to find his dad in the kitchen. This is a family-run business and it shows in the quality of its food. The mole is magnificent, huaraches heavenly and carne asada authentic. Portions are large, prices small and hours long—until 3 a.m. on weekends. Mexican food is a staple of my diet, and Francisco’s is increasingly a favored option.
