Looking to snap out of a midwinter rut? Step into lululemon athletica, where the friendly atmosphere, catchy music and stylish yoga togs will more than brighten your day—they’ll make you want to assume the tree pose and get your om on.

Founded in 1998 in Vancouver, B.C., lululemon was originally a yoga studio by day, design studio by night. The Hilldale shop opened in early November and is one of 150-plus stores lululemon now has nationwide (the other Wisconsin location is in Milwaukee). “The reason we were founded was to create superior technical product for yoga,” says Nina Gardner, community relations manager for lululemon. “It’s product that moves with you and allows you to focus on your workout.”

The gear is just as fashionable as it is functional: Racks of tanks in neon brights, color-blocked bottoms and patterned hoodies lend an on-trend look to your workout—and afterward. Guys get in on the action, too, with a whole section of men’s clothing and gear. And it’s all housed in an amazingly light and airy space with sleek shelving, bright walls, reclaimed wood flooring and beautifully merchandised product.

Despite its origins, lululemon athletica and its local team have created a decidedly Madison aesthetic, where yogis and non-yogis alike will feel welcome and rejuvenated. “Hilldale has such a neighborhood vibe, and we wanted to be a part of that,” says Gardner.

1) FITNESS FANS

Kristin McCormick and Ashley Saverine are the store’s management team as well as passionate lululemon fans. Every Saturday morning lululemon hosts a free yoga class featuring a different yoga studio monthly—Inner Fire Yoga, Dragonfly Hot Yoga and Orange Shoe Gym are just a few of the studios that have taught classes.

2) YEARNING FOR YOGA

These antimicrobial yoga mats provide a little cushioning during sessions ($48–$68). Stash your mat in one of the store’s frequently-changing stock of yoga bags (shown below)—they’re fashion and function in one. $48–$148

3) WORK IT OUT

With cheeky names like the “Wunder Under” pant, “No Limits” tank and the “Ta Ta Tamer” bra, yoga lovers and runners will love the stay-put gear that’s been tested on real men and women for comfort.

4) LEG UP

If you need a yoga or running pant, look no further—with a staggering 30 styles of pants, every woman can find the perfect fit. They even have tall styles and free pant hemming on-site! $70–$120

5) MIDWEST LOVE

Even though lululemon has a national (and international) presence, each store has a local imprint, says Gardner (just look for the mini Union chairs!). Every store manager gets to choose paint colors and layout, as well as plan activities and workshops with “ambassadors”—eight local people who symbolize wellness in the community. “We want to support the community. We want to be a hub for everything that is healthy in Madison,” says Gardner.
