MMoCA's Appearing Act
A visiting exhibition brings Harry Houdini to life
As director of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Stephen Fleischman is involved in all the wide-ranging exhibits the museum presents to the city.
But when he heard that New York City’s Jewish Museum was organizing an exhibition about Harry Houdini, he thought about how the famed magician grew up in Appleton. And when he learned that Houdini: Art and Magic would feature work by nearly twenty contemporary artists, he wanted the exhibition for MMoCA.
Says Fleischman, “These contemporary artists are great, and the connection to Wisconsin is too hard to resist.”
