East Side Funky
Named for Vito “Bunky” Capadona, its roots are in the old ’Bush, but today Bunky’s is right at home in the shadow of St. Bernard’s on Atwood Avenue. Housed in what used to be a neighborhood center, vibrant and vivacious, Bunky’s still is a gathering place for east-side diners. The food is an improbable yet compatible mix of Italian and Northern African—reflecting the marriage of its owners, Vito’s great-granddaughter Teresa Pullara-Oubel and Rachid Oubel. They keep alive an old Madison dining tradition: “spaghetti on the board,” a pasta feast for two or more served without plates. Almost as famous are the lavish homemade desserts.
