A conglomeration of jewelry, stylish gift items, cards, baby goods, plus a wine and martini bar all add up to a fantastic shop named Plum Crazy in Cottage Grove. Of course, at face value the name doesn’t exactly pinpoint what the gift boutique has in store for shoppers. Owner Jody Myrold admits, “My brother thought of the name, and I just thought it sounded unique and eclectic.”

Myrold opened the store in 2004 off of Cottage Grove Road in an area that’s seeing expansion—new homes and apartment buildings dot the busy road, and restaurants like Jovian Taphaus Grill and 1855 Saloon & Grill are nearby.

Lindsay Phillips leather ballet flats have interchangeable accents like flowers, buttons and bows, $64.95.My challenge to you is to go in and walk out empty-handed (I didn’t). Items like Archipelago candles and body items; Fred’s funny home and office items; Trumpette’s baby loafers and socks; hand-painted wineglasses; and Anne Taintor’s comical greeting cards and magnets all tempt customers as one-of-a-kind treats.

A former occupational therapist for the Monona Grove school district, Myrold had always wanted to open a shop and admits that in the past, she used to trek to Chicago for her retail therapy.

“I was tired of the shopping around here and I wanted to do a different concept,” she says, referring to her wine and martini bar. “I grew up on the east side and this is a growing community. We have customers driving here from Janesville, Marshall, Lodi—even Waukesha.”

Archipelago aromatic diffusers come in 20 different scents, $36.95.In addition to offering a glass of wine while shopping Myrold also hosts wine tastings a few times a month, and welcomes customers to sit on the patio in warmer weather.

This month look for Valentine’s Day gift items that she’s scouted out just for you.

“I don’t do this for the money—owning this store gives me the freedom to do what I want,” says Myrold. “And we have loyal customers, and we know their names here.”

So feel free to pick out a few things for yourself or a friend—and you just might turn into one of those loyal customers, too.
