How love ought to be
Fabu is now in her third year as Madison Poet Laureate. This is her poem in honor of two exciting February events: African American History Month and Valentine’s Day. She recently published Poems, Dreams and Roses, a book of poetry for elementary, middle and high school students. The book is available in local bookstores or by contacting her at artistfabu.com.
I want love
to be like a good pot of greens
pick the tenderest parts
separate from the hard stem
wash gently and thoroughly
removing every bit of dirt and grime
rinsing over and over and over
with the clear clean water of forgiveness
Season with savory meat, herbs and spices
and then simmer, simmer, simmer.
