Helping a Friend Turned Into Helping All Women in Dane County Affected by Breast CancerDeb Kusmec Aguilar has never suffered from breast cancer, but has devoted a large amount of her life to assisting women who have been. After her dear friend Lisa encouraged her to become involved at Breast Cancer Recovery, Kusmec was smitten with the usefulness she felt at helping these women. Her work continues today as she strives to help all breast cancer survivors return to their beautiful, rejuvenated selves. |

Former US Army Reserve Uses Talents to Assist Those Affected by Natural DisastersMax Oleson has always worked hard to assist people in need, no matter what the situation is. From serving in the US Army Reserve Commanding General to the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, Olseon believes in helping in any situation. Most recently, Oleson has dedicated himself to volunteering with the American Red Cross in the Disaster Services to help those impacted by natural disasters. Using his talents from his army reserve days, Oleson has proved himself as the 2012 American Red Cross From the Heart Hero. |

Local Librarian Sustains Library's Usefulness Through 21st CenturyLeah Fritsche always knew she wanted to be a librarian. From a young age she was organizing the shelves in her bedroom by her own Dewey Decimal System. Now the Director of the Deerfield Public Library, Fritsche wants future generations to continue to be inspired by books. Fritsche has partnered with the Beyond the Page campaign to create a permanent endowment fund thatwill support Dane County libraries forever. |

Local Citizen Helps Run Online Auction to Benefit Dane County Rape Crisis CenterMeg Rothstein was disheartened by the news of budget cuts to the Dane County Rape Crisis Center. And she decided to take action. She and others formed a grassroots organization to assist the RCC. Together, they are holding a citizen run online auction. Their actions show that citizens can make a difference during a time of budget cuts to beneficial services in Dane County. |

Former Educator Uses Retirement to Continue Improving the Environment for KidsSome people use retirement to play golf, while others use it as a way to continue the work they have always been passionate about. Joel Stone choose to go the second route, and take a more hands-on approach to the passion he has always had for teaching about the environment. Since retirement, Stone has volunteered at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center doing any number of jobs, all in the hopes of keeping the environment a fun place for kids. |

Local Woman Working to Clean the Lakes That Inspired Her CareerHeather Allen found her passion as an undergraduate at the UW-Madison while studying conservation biology and sampling the streams that fed into the Yahara River. After years in D.C. workin on international water policy, Allen has returned to Madison to help protect the Yahara Watershed, and the Lakes it's connected to. Join Allen during World Water Week and help make clean water accessible to all. |

Student Uses Lessons From Home to Build Homes For OthersMany college students take going home for a good meal, or even their tiny apartment, for granted. UW-Madison student Jennifer Beth, however, is extremely grateful for her home and wants to give others a home as well. Working with the campus Habitat for Humanity, Beth helps those less fortunate than she has been by raising funds and building homes for those in need. |

Local Woman Turns Fear Into Strength with HDSAShana Martin decided to stand up to the disease her mother struggled against. A disease Martin holds a 50 percent chance of developing to this day. Rather than hide, Martin chose to fight the fatal Huntington's Disease by becoming the spokesperson for the Huntington's Disease Society of America 17 years ago. |
