Pup Art
To Marcia Sparks, pets are works of art
When artist Marcia Sparks moved to Madison in 1996, she found inspiration in its architecture and icons. She soon discovered another muse: the city’s dogs and cats.
Using bold colors and a graphic, Pop style, Sparks seeks to create a fresh take on pet portraiture that captures animals’ lovable mannerisms and quirks.
“I don't want the animals to look too cute or just another drawing of a cat or dog. I want it to look really different, almost abstract, something you haven’t seen before,” she says. “Not necessarily the whole cat or dog, just the part I think says it all, such as the wag of a tail, a tongue hanging out, the cocked head, or the upside down look your cat gives you.”
