Sixth Annual Polar Dash Encourages Kids and Families To Get Active
Physicians Plus Insurance and Meriter are holding the sixth annual Polar Dash to help fight childhood obesity and encourage active families.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 16.6% of Wisconsin children ages 2 years to 5 years are obese and 9.3% of adolescents in Wisconsin grades 9 through 12 are obese.
To help combat obesity and show children that exercise can be fun, Physicians Plus and Meriter will be holding the sixth annual Polar Dash on Saturday, January 19 at the clinic and grounds of Meriter Monona from 10am-12pm. The event is part of the GO! Get Out Campaign, which encourages kids and their families to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle.
“Obesity is a growing problem for children across the country and in Wisconsin,” said Scott Shoemaker, director of communications and community relations for Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation. “We want to show kids and families that exercise can be fun and that winter activities can be enjoyed by the whole family.”
There will be two racecourses for children to run around pulling a plush polar bear on a sled through the snow: one course for younger kids and a faster course for older participants. Families will also be able warm up inside the clinic with fun treats and other activities.
The Polar Dash is a very popular event enjoyed by hundreds of children each year. Participants are encouraged to print and complete registration in advance by visiting www.pplusic.com.
The GO! Get Out Campaign was started by Physicians Plus in 2005 as a way to encourage families and children to lead more healthy and active lifestyles. The campaign provides families with fun, health-focused events and gives incentives to combat the increasing rate of childhood obesity.
