Inside a store that embodies summer (or serves as a quick pick-me-up when cooler temps roll around), Red Square Flowers provides a cheery backdrop for browsing tropical flowers, thick and fleshy ornamental plants known as succulents, and gifty items. The airy, luxe boutique atmosphere elevates the flower shopping experience.
Owner Alina Poletskova opened the shop in the Agora Pavilion a year ago this month because it has great lighting as well as location. “The Fitchburg area has developed so much in the last three years and has so much potential,” she says. “I wanted to be a destination-type of place, too.”
A Russian native, Poletskova did her floral training in Holland and southern California, which informs her design work. “In Holland, flowers are like a piece of art,”
she says. The shop specializes in tropical flowers, so look for birds of paradise, cymbidium orchids, pincushions and other greens from Hawaii, to name a few.
Among the lush greenery you’ll also find beautiful gifts like pottery, body lotions, soy candles and potted succulents. Gifts span the globe and come from as close as Wisconsin Dells (Roots Chocolates) and as far as Moscow in the traditional Russian toys she sells.
It’s an unexpected yet pleasing mix that makes Red Square worth stopping in to smell the orchids.
