Grupo Candela Heats Up Dane Dances
The band performs a mix of Latin styles
Six years ago, Manuel “Manny” Vellon, Roberto Rengel and Pavel Polanco formed Grupo Candela to play a blend of Latin musical styles. Today the twelve-member group does just that, performing salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia and Latin jazz. On August 5, the band makes its fifth appearance at the Dane Dances concert series held on the Monona Terrace rooftop. It’s an event Grupo Candela loves to play, and audiences share the enthusiasm. “At the end, when we announce our last song, they say ‘Otra, otra, otra,’” Vellon recalls. “And then we offer another one and then they ask for another one!”
