A combination of contemporary and Prairie styles makes a Middleton man and his son feel right at home

Jay Weatherford has contemporary style mastered.
When Weatherford decided to build on a new lot in Middleton, he knew he wanted something modern, but not too “off-the-wall.” Inspired by the look of HGTV’s 2011 Green Home, he enlisted the help of Encore Construction, Inc. to rework the layout with a few added twists. The result? A modern and Prairie hybrid, with a touch of industrial flair.
“I’ve always liked that Frank Lloyd Wright style and then just kind of cleaned it up for a more contemporary look,” says Weatherford, a sales consultant for CareFusion, Inc.
A color scheme of greens, yellows, browns and grays runs throughout the home—from the entryway’s black brick façade, which is used again around the interior fireplace, to dark chocolate floors offset by a mustard-hued area rug.
Making style choices was easy for Weatherford, but finding pieces that matched his vision took a little more time. He spent around a year searching and buying, including shopping stops during his regular business trips to Chicago, to find just the right touches to make his mod house feel homey.
At just twenty-five feet wide, Weather-ford’s home might seem small on paper, but the airiness of its design counteracts the measurements. An open floor plan on the lower level connects the kitchen, dining and living spaces, where Weatherford says he spends most of his time.
“I’ve got access to everything. It flows really simply without having to move around too much,” Weatherford says of the space.
Additionally, clean lines on slim furniture keep the area feeling light and spacious, while an adjoining porch makes it easy for Weatherford to extend the kitchen area outdoors for barbeques or to enjoy a cup of coffee.
A custom-made steel banister carries the modern vibe upstairs, where a lofted entertainment space offers son Austin, age ten, room to play video games and watch movies. Natural light streams in through a series of narrow windows above the area.
An avid art collector, Weatherford designed cutouts in the walls to display his favorite contemporary pieces from artists throughout the Midwest, including some he snagged at Art Fair on the Square.
“There’s definitely not any wasted space. It just lays out real efficiently,” he says.
