A Shopping Soiree This Weekend

A Shopping Soiree This Weekend

We all love a good deal, no matter what it’s for, and Midwesterners are especially fond of value pricing. So when I stepped in to Lillians on Atwood recently for a sneak peek of the place, I was pleasantly surprised to see jewelry, handbags and sunglasses—all for under $50. Many run much under $50, like a pearl cluster necklace that I coveted for $18 that looked worthy of the J. Crew catalogue (that would likely sell in their pages for $118!). Pricing is wallet-friendly: handbags average $34, clothing is $22–$42 and jewelry averages $16.

Lillians is not open every day, though. They employ what’s called “occasional sales,” which means that the Atwood shop is only open four days per month, as well as other days for special sales.

This weekend (October 7–10) Lillians will host a sale as well as on October 15 (National Mammogram Day) and October 16. The shop is always open the first Thursday through Sunday of every month. I toured the shop (with charming historical details like a white pressed-tin ceiling) with owner Kristi Freidel, who opened the shop in September and is excited to bring the first Lillians location to the Madison market.

Why open Lillians here in Madison?

They’re familiar to people in Minnesota—there are sixteen locations in Buffalo alone. (Editor’s note: Lillians has thirty-six locations in eight states). For two years I had a shop in Cambridge but I decided to move to Madison. I’m an east sider, so this spot was convenient for me and I love the east side. The vibe here is good and the people are amazing. Plus, we had to be in a stand-alone location, not a strip mall. And there are a lot of strip malls around here. I wanted to bring something different to Madison, and none of our prices are over $50.

Why are you open only four days per month?

Because it’s an event and a fun party. We have cookies, coffee and it’s a fun atmosphere. And being open only that much makes it special. I love that event feel.

What other special touches do you bring into the shop?

We have Diva Nights where a host can invite a minimum of 20 friends and have a private party at the store. They can do this any night, not just when we’re open, and there’s no extra charge. We do spa services—chair massages and paraffin waxes.
We also have a punch card that for every $20 you spend you get a punch, and when you fill up the card you get $30 off in the store.

How do you change the store month to month?

We have unique product every month. We do carry some things over but for the most part much of it is new. In November and December we’ll carry more holiday items.
