The Deals and the Dish on Where You Need to Shop

I’m taking a weekend trip and I always race around the night before figuring out what to pack. This time though I’m thinking about it ahead of time and packing my carry-on as efficiently as possible. Paying baggage fees is a drag, and plus, a carry-on for a weekend trip is just the perfect size. I thought I’d share my fall travel essentials with you, since some of you might be taking weekend jaunts here and there, or going to visit family over the upcoming holidays.
This is just a wardrobe essential in general, but I find that skinny jeans transition perfectly from day to night. For day I pair a dark pair with a fitted T and blazer (and add a few accessories, of course!) and slip on a pair of boots. Then for night I swap out the boots for heels and might change the top, depending on where I’m going.
A must for when you’re walking around all day, flat boots keep your feet comfy and seriously warm for when it gets cool outside!
I usually wear two layers on the airplane. That’s because I’m one of those people that’s always cold—especially on planes. So donning a short- or long-sleeve T and a blazer ensure that I’ll be plenty warm (I love the Ella Moss "Pierre" stripe blazer above, from shopbop.com). Plus then I can wear the blazer out at night, too.
I bring a scarf because they’re fashionable and functional. They keep my neck warm on the plane but they’re always extra chic thrown on with an outfit worn out and about. If you recall my blog from a few weeks ago, I said I was on the hunt for a leopard scarf. Well, I found one at H&M—a gray/black leopard version that I’ve already worn twice to add extra oomph to outfits.
I’m very odd about light when I’m sleeping. I need a room to be dark, so I always wear a sleep mask. My friends think this is funny and make jokes about it—but I need it! So, I bring a travel version wherever I go, too.
Avon Satin Gel eyeliner & DiorShow Mascara
I think eyeliner is one of the best things (besides mascara) to wake up one’s eyes, add emphasis and make them appear larger. Recently I purchased Avon’s satin gel eyeliner (it comes in a little pot; you apply it with a brush) and was very impressed. The colors are rich in pigment (I have a black/brown color and black pearl), stay on all day and appear almost as dark as a liquid liner, which I love. I was long on the hunt for a liquid-type liner that didn’t make me look ridiculous and wasn’t tricky to apply and this product is happily both.
And of course I can’t leave the house without DiorShow on—it’s the best mascara I’ve ever bought and I’ve been a devotee for over seven years now. It makes my lashes appear full and lush and stays on all day.
Having an entire jewelry box that’s almost a mini dresser (really, it is) can make it tough to choose what to bring on a trip. So I usually pick out two necklaces that can stow away easily and will go with the most outfits. The ones I wear most often are a black and gold fringey one from Forever 21 and a big chain one from H&M. And of course I’ll bring a cocktail ring (my current fave shown at left is my House of Harlow gray sunburst ring from shopbop.com), my two chain bracelets (one of which was a thrift-store find!) and my Michael Kors watch—all classic, yet eye-catching, essentials that add a touch of glam to any outfit.
I anticipate we’ll go out to dinner or the like at least one of the nights I’m on my trip, so I always bring a clutch with me that carries the essentials out of my larger handbag. Another thing I always carry in my regular handbag is a little black wristlet from Coach—I get a lot of compliments on it but it’s seriously a great piece for when I need to go to an event and don’t want to carry a handbag. It’s just the right size to hold my cell phone, money and keys.
Although I love flat boots for day, I like to step it up a bit at night with a pair of pumps. Every trip needs a little bit of glam, right? I'm leaning toward bring along my leopard pair, because they add the just the right amount of interest to my typical nighttime getups of black tops and blazers!
