Seven Makeup Bag Must-Haves

Seven Makeup Bag Must-Haves

Wedding and outdoor-party season is coming up and nothing says “makeup meltdown” quicker than a combo of sporting makeup all day in hot temps (or on a sweaty dance floor). Your plan of attack? Look refreshed and fabulous with these products.

Primer

Considered a secret weapon by makeup artists everywhere, this is essential to smooth on if you want your face makeup to last. Apply a little bit larger than a pea-size dollop of primer on before your foundation and instantly your skin tone will be improved. It also acts like a “buffer” to outside elements and keeps foundation looking fresh.
Try:
Laura Mercier (who has multiple formulations of her Foundation Primer) and Smashbox are very highly regarded in the industry—and I’ve tried both—and they work amazingly.
I have Avon’s MagiX Face Perfecter (which can be worn under makeup as a primer or alone) at home but have not tried it yet—but it has amazing reviews on the website (check them out).
I’ve also heard positive things about L’Oreal’s Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base, which has a wallet friendly price point of $11–$12.

Eyelid Primer

Creased eye shadow is not flattering—stripes are for outfits, not eyes! If you’re going to wear eye shadow all day purchase a cream shadow or wear an eye primer under your powder shadow. Similar to the face primer that I highlighted above you’ll want to wear this—I have yet to find an eye shadow (high-end or drugstore) that doesn’t crease by the end of the day. But once you apply an eye primer—voila—you’ll have fresh-looking eyeshadow all day and night (really!)
Try:
Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion applies smoothly and really does give excellent results.
Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance is similar to Urban Decay’s product and provides lasting coverage.

Cheek Tint/Stain

If you want that I-just-went-for-a-run glow (without, you know, going for a run and getting sweaty) rub in a little cheek tint for amazing (and lasting) rosy cheeks.
Try:
Benefit Benetint comes in a cute nail polish-esque bottle (and it’s what I use daily).
New York Color’s Blushable Cream Stick instantly imparts a fresh glow in a creamy formula.
NARS’ The Multiple stick is coveted by women everywhere for its multi-use capabilities—it can be used on eyes, lips or cheeks—and can be easily toted in a handbag, too.

Concealer

I won’t rehash my blog post from the other week—but I highly recommend Make Up For Ever’s Full Cover Concealer, which has a nice creamy consistency and is waterproof for all-day coverage.

Stay-Put Lipcolor

While I love a good lip gloss they simply don’t last all day. Try an all-day lipcolor for lasting results—after all, you want to have fun at the festivities—not reapply your lipcolor all day.
Try:
CoverGirl Outlast Smoothwear All-Day Lipcolor and Outlast All-Day Lipcolor has the largest range of shades I’ve seen for this type of product in drug stores. Be aware it’s tough to pick out a color as sometimes the shade varies a bit from the box.
Revlon, L’Oreal and Almay also make all-day lipcolors and I recommend trying those because they’re inexpensive and you can try many different shades.
Lip stains are all the rage right now—and rightly so because they do provide a rosy, just-kissed lip color. And they last. I’ve tried Maybelline’s lip stain, which has a less intense look than lipstick.

Blotting Sheets

These are a savior for warm, humid days. Don’t apply powder over your existing makeup—use a blotting sheet to absorb excess oil and you’ll forgo extra layers of powder that’ll just get sweaty again in the heat. As a photo shoot stylist myself, these are always in my photo-shoot bag.
Try:
Forget the packets of 50 blotting sheets for $10 at Sephora. The most amazing deal around is packet of 50 blotting sheets for only $1 by e.l.f. at Target.

Waterproof Eyeliner

Eyeliner and mascara are the most important elements to a girl’s eye makeup look. Nothing gives the eye more definition than using these two items—plus a sexy cat eye or winged liner is very now, no? So pick up liners specifically labeled “waterproof” for all-day results.
Try:
Gotta love the e.l.f. brand—I’ve had excellent results with their $1 Waterproof Eyeliner Pen that is amazingly easy to apply (it’s like a fine-tip marker!). The black shade is excellent—I wouldn’t recommend the brown shade as it’s not intense enough.
I also like Revlon’s Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen, which is very similar to e.l.f.’s and promises to be smudge-proof for up to sixteen hours.
Sephora’s waterproof Smoky Cream Liner has a great price point (only $10!) and allows you to apply more or less depending on how intense you’d like to go. This liner does require practice to put on because you need to apply it with an eyeliner brush. But it lasts all day! If you want a more conventional eyeliner try Sephora’s Doe Eyed Felt Eyeliner or their pencil Kohl Waterproof Eyeliner.

A disclaimer: I have tried all of the products I list above—but there are many, many more that can be found if you stop in to Sephora, Ulta or a department store and talk to the experts there.
