Pick of the Week: Face Magic

Pick of the Week: Face Magic

We hire makeup artists here for our photo shoots and I often end up chatting with them as they're doing their thing on our photo subjects. A question I frequently ask is what products they're using and what makeup colors they love. More often than not, a makeup artist's recommendation is hands-down much more useful than just blindly walking into a department store or Sephora and picking out a product (unless you've used it before).

The Make Up For Ever line (sold in Madison at Sephora) was one I had heard of but never tried until recently. A few months ago we had a makeup artist in here and we were talking makeup and she recommended the line's undereye concealer. I already had Make Up For Ever's HD Microfinish Powder, a colorless translucent powder that sets foundation and gives skin a smooth finish (the HD in the name refers to High Definition, which means it's makeup ideal for use in high-definition film and television). The powder was much better than any other powder I had tried (and I've tried everything from Clinique to Neutrogena to Maybelline).

Allow me to digress and say that I love drugstore products as much as anyone—and in fact have recommended some on this blog before (here and here) but face makeup is tough to purchase because you can't sample it at Target or Walgreen's. It's also quite tough to find a creamy, thick-enough undereye concealer from a drugstore brand that covers well enough—and in fact I've never found one personally. That's why I pay more and go with a dependable department store brand.

A few weeks ago I needed more undereye concealer, and remembering the makeup artist's recommendation, I stopped in Sephora and got color-matched for the Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer by a employee. I wanted to see how my current Estée Lauder concealer stacked up against the new one. After purchasing a tube, when I got home I put each product under each eye and I was blown away at how much better the Make Up For Ever product was—it gave my eye luminosity without looking cakey or heavy. I could've gotten no sleep and if I slapped that baby on no one could probably tell! (The product description actually notes: "Designed to cover major imperfections like scars, hyperpigmentation, major discoloration, burns, and tattoos." So it's probably no surprise this stuff lasts all day—it's even waterproof!) The Lauder one had always worked well for me before (I've been using it for years) but the Full Cover Concealer will definitely be my new favorite. Try it out—looking good every day is worth it, no?
