How to Do Apres-Ski

How to Do Apres-Ski

Recently I was asked to contribute a blog post on what après-ski fashion means for the Clean Lakes Alliance's Frozen Assets party on February 18. Here are my thoughts on how to dress in aprés-ski chic.

Après-ski fashion is about being cozy, comfortable yet chic. The term refers to stopping at the ski lodge bar after hitting the slopes to mix and mingle with fellow skiiers. Of course you don’t have to be a skiier to don this look—here’s a primer.

Sweaters: Typically worn under ski attire, these transition easily from day to night. Look for beautiful fair-isle knits for a classic take on the look for men or women. Designers also have shown slim-fit sweaters in sporty silhouettes in patterns, stripes and bold colors paired with a slim pant for a very cutting-edge look for women. And feel free to layer—a sweater goes with most of the items outlined below—for more visual interest.

Vests: Try layering your trusty, down-filled vest (opt for a slimmer version if you can so as not to add bulk). Men can add a sweater vest over a dress shirt, too. Women, here’s where you can add a ton of fun and dimension to your look—pick out a faux-fur topper for an undeniably fashionable feel.

Dresses: Ladies, for an “I just spent all day shopping in Park City” look, a dress will do just that. Pick out a sweater dress, wrap jersey look or simple cotton knit and add a faux-fur jacket or vest and, of course, boots. For a distinctly nighttime look, add a statement necklace or scarf–especially if you’re wearing a solid color.

Hats: There are many hats out there for both men and women to add a jaunty signature to their ensemble. Men, look for a newsboy cap if you’re wearing non-ski clothing; women, add a faux-fur hat or a wide-brim, ’70s number (think Kim Kardashian) if you’re choosing non-athletic wear.

Boots: A cornerstone of the après-ski look is boots. If you want to go authentic après-ski check out versions by North Face or Sorel for heavy-duty, yet fashionable picks. These boots will likely be waterproof, have sturdy soles and keep your feet warm. If you’re feeling the out-west vibe pull on a pair of cowboy boots, which are en vogue in western resort towns. Women, if you’re going to wear a dress or skinny jeans with your look, any boot will do. Bonus points for faux fur accents, of course.

Pants: Men, feel free to wear khakis, jeans or wool dress pants to finish off your look and you’ll be set to don a dapper, après-ski look.
