Perfect Prep

Perfect Prep

I've been enamored lately with late summer's preppy pieces and early fall's ladylike looks. In our August issue we highlighted four ways to change up your look (two of those for women) using some essential pre-fall pieces like a bow-topped flat, plaid button-up and gorgeous wide-leg trouser. Because of space constraints we can't always include everything we want to in our City Style pages about these show-stopping looks, so I thought I'd offer some additional hints here.

Tip #1: You can transition many wardrobe pieces from summer into fall. In all honesty, every one of the pieces in the summer look could be worn in the fall, too. A lace skirt will be perfect come cooler weather with a silky tank and cardigan paired with a fierce wedge, platform or even boot. However, stay away from very lightweight fabrics late into fall—linen and thin white stretch cotton comes to mind.

Tip #2: Rules are meant to be broken. I mention the white cotton above as a disclaimer that there are certain items that cannot transition from season to season—however, white can be worn year-round in the correct fabric. For example, pick up where your white cotton summer-weight pant left off by replacingThis Who What Wear recent spread perfectly captures the preppy, chic aesthetic.it with a more seasonal white lightweight wool (or wool blend) trouser or skirt for winter.

Tip #3: This fall we'll see comfort. See those patent flats in our August spread and the wide-leg trouser? Both are pieces that offer style and comfort. The trouser is a hot, hot style for fall—and also makes you look leggy and model-esque with the high-waist design and skimming fabric. Also look for kitten heels, yet another style that isn't a sky-high stiletto.
