Creative Coifs Shined at MMoCA’s Hair Affair

Creative Coifs Shined at MMoCA’s Hair Affair

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s 2013 Hair Affair: The Art of Hair event was held on Thursday, April 24 and area salons came out in full force to style and design fantastical hair sculptures. The Hair Affair is one of my favorite events (this is the third annual celebration) because it showcases the stunning array of talent our city has in our chief hair couturiers. See below for some of my snaps of the event!

This year’s theme was time travel, and steampunk, Native American influences, Bladerunner, burlesque and even ancient Greek mythology all served as inspirations in the ensembles and towering hair masterpieces.

To prep for the event, salons started dreaming up their concepts months in advance. And their handiwork showed in the sheer amount of materials that were used—and hair extensions that were purchased!

My favorite look (and, I suspect many people’s that night!) was Alan Koa Salon Spa’s 16th century queen of the past and future. The salon’s crew literally mashed up two concepts that produced extravagant results. The costume was made with thirty bags of hair extensions (!), Plexiglas and even parts of a vaccuum cleaner.
