In recognition of Madison’s ever-growing obsession with expertly crafted cocktails, Madison Magazine is hosting a new event called Dueling Mixologists, a spinoff of its annual Dueling Chefs event. The duel will take place next Monday, April 14, at Plate & Barrel from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and will bring more than a dozen of Madison’s best bartenders together to decide who can fashion the best cocktail in the city.
There won’t be any shortage of big names, nor will there be a lack of variety. The mixologists in attendance wield plenty of clout and credibility and come from such establishments as the Old Fashioned, Tornado Steakhouse, Opus Lounge, DLUX, Heritage Tavern, Forequarter, Umami and Mason’s on Main. (Find the full list here.)
While the mixologists will be putting their own recipes together, this contest comes with a (lemon?) twist. Provided by Willy Street Co-op, a secret ingredient will be included in each cocktail. The secret ingredient will be announced on WISC-TV3’s News 3 This Morning program tomorrow morning (Wednesday, April 9).
Samples of the cocktails will be available to all in attendance, and a vote among all participating attendees will determine the duel’s winning mixologist.
If sampling tasty craft cocktails somehow doesn’t convince you to join the party, perhaps the international menu provided by Plate & Barrel will sway you (ever try shark bites?). In addition, the event will feature a live performance from Jerry Fitzpatrick of the Nine Thirty Standard. Finally—and perhaps most importantly, with the full knowledge that no meal can be complete without a well-crafted dessert—Cupcakes-A-Go-Go will provide cocktail-themed cupcakes for the mix-off.
Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
