Weekend Recap: Café Cortadito Opens, Farmers’ Market Returns, Restaurant Samples at Flavors of Madison

New Café Opens in Cardinal Bar

Cardinal Bar now houses Café Cortadito in what used to be the nightclub’s coatroom. With Spanish-influenced menu items like churros, croquetas, ceviche and fried plantains, Cortadito offers something for Cardinal patrons as well as passersby on the street via its “walk-through” (or bike-through) window counter. Café Cortadito also serves weekend brunch starting at 10 a.m.

The café is run by Chris and Prentice Berge (owners of Natt Spil, Weary Traveler, the now-defunct Restaurant Magnus, among others), David Oliver (chef at Natt Spil) and Joey Dunscombe (chef at Weary Traveler).

Hours are Tuesday–Friday from 3 p.m.–3 a.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.– 3 a.m. Closed Mondays. 


Outdoor Farmers’ Market Returns

The Dane County Farmers’ Market was back on Capitol Square this past Saturday. Despite chilly temperatures, attendance was high, with more visitors arriving after 10 a.m. once it warmed up a bit, according to market manager Larry Johnson. 

Eighty vendors were present on the Square this week. Once the market is in full swing, Johnson says the vendor numbers vary between 160 and 170-plus. 

Two new vendors were added this year. One is a vegetable stand, run by Derek Morrick; the other, by Mary-Ann Twist, sells peonies. 


Flavors of Madison Event Draws Big Crowd

More than 20 Madison Originals restaurants cooked up sample-size dishes for the 400-plus attendees at the annual Flavors of Madison event, held at the Madison Concourse Hotel Sunday evening.

Local, independently-owned restaurants that were present at the tasting event included Brasserie V, Liliana’s Restaurant, Banzo, Dayton Street Grille, Blue Marlin, Quivey’s Grove, Captain Bill’s, Porta Bella Restaurant, Roman Candle Pizzeria, Pizza Brutta and the Nitty Gritty. 

Attendees had the chance to vote for their favorite eateries, and at the end of the night, Blue Marlin snagged first place, with Liliana’s in second and Bonfyre American Grille in third. Blue Marlin was also a personal favorite for its curry crab soup, as were the Roman Candle for the Algo Malo pizza and Creamery Café for the poached pear tart.
