It's an Unbelievable Weekend for Local Music

It's an Unbelievable Weekend for Local Music

Winter Song, an "indie-acoustic local holiday harvest," is Friday night at the Majestic and features several local bands and singers.

The regional and national touring bands dominate the clubs in the month of October, but when the air gets cold things get hot for local music. This weekend has so much to offer it bears extra attention. Honest to God you just can't go wrong this weekend. This is one of the strongest lineups in the clubs I've seen. Shame that you can't be in more than one place at a time. Hopping strongly suggested. What's below is just a sampling; the rest of the clubs are brimming over with local talent of all kinds.

Friday

WINTERSONG: An Indie-Acoustic Local Holiday Harvest
Majestic Theatre, 7 p.m., majesticmadison.com
This is an acoustic/folk fan's dream local lineup: Anna Vogelzang, Count This Penny, Dietrich Gosser, PHOX, Whitney Mann, Crane Your Swan Neck, Corey Hart, & Paul Otteson. The musicians are banding together to raise money and food donations for Second Harvest Food Bank. There will be acoustic sets, seasonal selections and spontaneous collaborations.

People Brothers Band / Smokin' Bandits / Honest Monday
High Noon Saloon, 9 p.m, high-noon.com
People Brothers Band took home a lot of hardware at the recent MAMAs. The R&B/Funk/Soul band is on a roll. From the ashes of Fat Maw Ronney, Honest Monday put out a gem of an album and deliver a great live show. Also features La Crosse's Smokin' Bandits.

Controlled Chaos Anniversary Glam Party
The Frequency, 9:30 p.m., madisonfrequency.com
The glam comes out at the Frequency to celebrate the anniversary of Controlled Chaos as well as some birthdays. Performers include Sexy Ester, Shane Shane, Cowboy Winter and Royal Station. This is an eclectic lineup at one of our coolest clubs. If you want to experience "Madison" music, this is the place.

Saturday

WORT's 38th Birthday Party
High Noon Saloon, 5 p.m., high-noon.com
Another awesome lineup at this early show. The Jimmys with support from Earl Foss & The Brown Derby and Icarus Himself. Delicious eats from New Orleans Takeout and Carl's Cakes. Give WORT the love they want and so badly deserve.

Transformer Lootbag / The Hussy / Control / Trin Tran
High Noon Saloon, 9:30 p.m., high-noon.com
After you've cavorted with WORT you can stick around for this fantastic lineup of local talent. A Transformer Lootbag gig is a rarity and they'll hook you with their jagged rock. The Hussy is the underground champion of the city. Garage rock at its finest. Control is hot on their heels in the underground scene. Trin Tran is another unique take on what makes Madison music special.

The Cardinal Anniversay Party
Cardinal Bar, 7 p.m., cardinalbar.com
The Cardinal Bar is an institution and a long-time supporter of local music. The club will celebrate 39 years and the building will celebrate 105 years. Incredible. There will be a champagne buffet and music by DJs Chamo, Colorao and Rumba.

German Art Students / Bing Bong / The August Teens
Crystal Corner Bar, 9:30 p.m., thecrystalcornerbar.com
Stupendous party lineup. The German Art Students celebrate fifteen years as a band. You will never have so much fun partying with the power pop/rock of the August Teens either. Maybe they'll whip out an obscure, cool cover especially for this event. That's right. Not a show. An event. Another delicious slice of "Madison" music.
