"Street Fair" by Gregg Kreutz

A stop into Fanny Garver Gallery this month rewards visitors with a visual journey—all courtesy of the brushstrokes of Gregg Kreutz.

More than twenty recent works by the Wisconsin-raised and New York City-based painter and playwright range from still lifes and portraits to interiors, landscapes and cityscapes. But what unifies this diverse group of oil paintings is the artist’s incredible sense of light and the powerful atmosphere it creates.

Sunlight dapples a small city festival in “Street Fair” and quiet streets in “Mexican Sun” and casts shadows on pretty pink buildings in “Down the Street in Assisi.” And it illuminates nature in “Irish Lake” and “Up the Hudson,” two landscapes depicting soaring hills and inviting bodies of water.

The tones—and moods—are darker in Kreutz’s interior scenes. “Back Stage,” for instance, shows a woman tailoring an actress’s elaborate dress beneath a heavy red curtain; a half dozen others stand amid costumes and props in this shadowy space. Meanwhile, “The Actor” is a compelling portrait of a man, his eyes meeting the viewer’s gaze and his right hand raised to his green shirt. Light hits his face but the rest of the scene is softer, cast in shadows.

And strong light enhances the presence of Kreutz’s still life elements, infusing tea pots, fruit, flowers and more with a feeling of importance.

As the artist states on his website, “For me, painting is an opportunity to learn what is meaningful. Each picture is a visual separation of the highly significant from the less significant. Painting is really a window into the essential.”
