Art Fairs Sneak Peek

Art Fairs Sneak Peek

"Fall Afternoon on State Street" by Mark Mueller

Local arts lovers know the second weekend in July well—and many eagerly anticipate it because it brings two major art fairs to downtown Madison. Here’s a quick look at both annual events:

Art Fair on the Square

Location: Capitol Square
Focus: Over the past fifty-five years, this signature arts festival has grown to highlight the work of more than 450 local and national painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, jewelers and other artists, along with a diverse array of music and food.
Featured artist: Kansas artist Anthony Pack uses recycled materials to build mixed-media works, such as his “Mr. Bluebird” (pictured at right) made from reclaimed wood and children’s toy parts.

Art Fair off the Square

Location: Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Monona Terrace esplanade
Focus: Now in its thirty-fifth year, this celebration of Wisconsin art showcases the ceramics, art glass, fiber art, sculpture, jewelry and more from roughly 140 artists from across the state, along with some food offerings.
Featured artist: Graphic artist Mark Mueller, whose renderings of local scenes often start with pen and ink drawing and are then embellished with pastels.

Both events take place July 12–13. For details, visit mmoca.org and artcraftwis.org.
